WBD: What sparked your interest in music and how did you get started?

As far back as I remember I was always banging on this antique scofield upright piano my parents bought as a furniture piece. I’ve always been drawn to the sound of the piano, especially older ones with a lot of character to their sound.

WBD: Describe your sound in 3 words.

Most people will say : Indie pop R&B but I’d say somewhere between everything.

WBD: Who are your biggest musical influences?

I’m pretty all over the map as far as influences go. I grew up listening to a lot of Sub Pop stuff but as far as this project goes I remember listening to a lot of new wave when I was writing a lot of the early ideas for Wildcat. Bands like Orange Juice, Brian Eno, Randy Newman. I also have a really big soft spot for ambient, noise rock stuff like Mogwai, Silver Mount Zion.

WBD: What is your favorite part of performing live?

Music is one of the only things in my life I’ve been able to do without caring what others think. Playing live is my time to be confident and play with everything I have. I usually end up feeling really insecure if I don’t play, it keeps me stable.

WBD: Tell us one of the coolest things that’s happened in your career so far.

Playing Lollapalooza, playing sold out shows and hearing our music on the radio are all really cool things that have happened but I’d have to say the best thing that’s happened has been the interactions with our fans. Our fans are incredible and we have heard some really wonderful stories about how our music has impacted them. It never gets old.

WBD: What’s coming up for you that you’re excited about?

There’s talk about doing a film score which is really exciting for me. We are also really excited to start writing again.

WBD: Who would you love to work with and why?

I’m obsessed with Cashmere Cat and respect everything he’s worked on. He’s got this genre bending quality that I love and his production is out of this world.

WBD: What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?

Intention is everything. Don’t let anyone come and change it.

WBD's Fun Five
with Wildcat! Wildcat!
1
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why?
This might be the dumbest answer to some people but I really love where I live now (Long Beach, CA). There's just too many things I would miss if I moved. I do wish my family lived a little closer though, then it would be perfect.
2
If I gave you $20 to spend on anything right now, what would it be?
Probably a record. I've sold too many of my records to pay rent, go on tour, buy equipment. It's just not in the budget right now. Either that or a round of golf.
3
Tell us something about yourself that would surprise people.
Running is one of my all time favorite things to do. I start freaking out if I go more than a few days without running. Weird I know.
4
What advice would you give to your 15 year old self?
I think I would probably tell my self to not be so uptight.
5
One guilty pleasure you aren't willing to give up?
This is really weird but I really love Big 5. Reading the weekly ad or just browsing. I love Big 5.
